Obituary of Albert David Davis
Passed away peacefully in Pontiac Reception Centre, Shawville, Quebec on Friday, February 21, 2020 at the age of 85 years. Beloved husband of Joan Sunderland and cherished father of Amber (late Darry McCarthy) and Kerry (Ramona). Special grandfather of Ashley and Joel Davis and Neil, Kent and Nicholas McCarthy. At Al’s request, there will be no service. His wish was granted and his body has been donated to the Ottawa University for cancer research.
“Al was very community minded and was a great advocate of sports for young people. He initiated the formation of the Recreation Association in Bryson believing that sports would unite the community.
Al was involved in coaching minor league baseball and girls broomball in Bryson and minor hockey in Shawville. He organized the largest national midget hockey tournament in Shawville with participation of fifty-two hockey teams from all over Quebec and Ontario. Players were billeted out to private homes and motels, which was quite a feat back in the mid seventies. We remember hosting an entire hockey team at our house for the weekend including coaches and parents!
Al spent numerous years as a director for the ODHA and on the board of directors for the CAHA. He arranged hosting, travel and game schedules for international hockey teams that came to Canada and the USA to play against other semi pro and university teams. In 1974, he was travelling with the national team from Yugoslavia when their coach became ill. Al took over as interim coach. Later that year, Al was invited to Yugoslavia and was offered the head coaching position for their national team, which he declined after some careful reflection.
Al had a long career with Consolidated Bathurst as a power engineer, all the while continuing his community involvement serving two terms on council and one term as mayor of Bryson.
We love you Dad and you will be missed very much by your family!”
