I was a pretty green reporter when I came to Shawville and The Equity in 1994. Jean was one of the first people I met, and she taught me a lot: about Shawville, about spelling people's names right, and about giving back to the community. I'll never forget that first week or two on the job, I was armed with a list of apartments for rent and was about to go searching. She took one look at my list and crossed off about half of them. "You won't want to live there, Sylvia," she said, matter-of-factly. Of course, she was right.
I heard lots of stories about her boys, whom she was so proud of, Jim's Lake and her camping trips. Even though we only worked together for a few years before she retired, I won't forget how welcome she made me feel at The Equity and, later on, after she retired, in the community. She always had time for a chat, and I'm glad I had one last chat with her on her verandah this past Shawville Fair. In her matter-of-fact way, she explained how sick she was, but she was going to keep on fighting. We were so sorry to hear the news.

My condolences to everyone in Jean's family, particularly Versil, Colin and Grant, who, along with Jean, have been valued members of the Pontiac Printshop family for many years. Jean had an extensive knowledge and understanding of our community, and was an important part of THE EQUITY, deciphering, editing and typesetting news stories, assisting with accounting, and leading our team in Shawville's annual curling bonspiel. I was fortunate to meet Jean several times since she retired, and will always remember her kindness and good humour, and her continued enthusiasm and support for many different community events.

Arrival at the Smith household growing up was always a welcoming experience.
Jean always had a smile, a comment, and a gentle, yet firm hand when it came to dealing with teenaged boys. Somehow there always seemed to be something to eat, and drink, yet it was only provided to those sitting at the kitchen table in a "proper" manner.
