Dear Larry, Diane & family.
I was so sad to learn of the passing of your mom. It doesn't matter what age it happens, it leaves a huge hole in your heart. I am upset that I was late in hearing about this, but that's the way it's going with me these days. Big hugs to all of you. I hope to see you soon.
Much love.

I wrote this poem for my beloved Aunt Ethel.
Elegy for a Grand Lady
A swing set, childless
adopts the November wind
the soft river flows gently
a silent glittering carpet
stretching o’er the silent gulf in my heart
embracing all I know
of tenderness and passion
my woes a low whisper…
My tears drop freely
upon the weightless lace of memory
I look up
as though spying a glorious comet of ice and dust
for death is but a transition
nothing really dies…
Death is my thorn
my rose and my prayer
the grace at the heart of grief
uniting us forever.

Hi Lawrence and Diane. Carole told me the sad news about Aunt Ethel. Our condolences to you and your lovely family. She was such an amazing woman, a real inspiration.
She so loved being a big part of your kids' lives. I am sure they are grieving, as well as your grandchildren. My kids both still have, and love, the quilts she made them years ago - an ABC quilt for Lauren and for Sam a hound dog with big floppy ears. I know they will be passing them on to their kids. Lauren already has, to her one year old son Max.
She was always so calm and full of common sense. I remember one time going for lunch at her place in Valleyfield with Lauren and Sam. It was a time when both kids didn't like any food like stew, where different kinds of food were mixed together - they wanted their food groups not to touch! ( Glad that didn't last long). Aunt Ethel had made chicken a la king for lunch and she noticed that both my kids were just pushing their food around their plates. She didn't say anything about it, just got up and within a few minutes gave them each a toasted cheese sandwich. I remember Sam saying :"Aunt Ethel, that is the bessssstttt cheese sandwich I have ever had in my whole life."
During the Olympics a few years ago in Vancouver, I got hold of a pair of the rare and coveted red mitts that were the symbol of the Vancouver Olympics. I sent them to Aunt Ethel and got a note back saying that everyone in the home was jealous and she just couldn't wait to wear them in front of everyone for every event they watched on tv. Mischievous!
She was so lovely, but of course you know that. You made her such a part of your lives and it is a model for everyone. And I can see you carrying on where she left off.
I will never forget her. Hope you are thinking about all the good things. Thinking about you.
Best regards,
Betty and family.

Our hearts are full of sadness today as our favourite resident at the Old Age Home in Shawville has passed.
We, the students in the "apartment" loved Ethel dearly. She had the patience and expertise to play Scrabble with everyone regardless of their abilities. Her love of the game has rubbed off onto our class and her special scrabble board encouraged us to buy one just like it!
She loved us all and we loved her! Rest in peace Ethel as you will always be remembered.
