Uncle Hilgert taught me to fish and hunt and to respect the animals. His dedication to the Church goes without saying and he and his brother Gustave always tried to be the first ones at church on Sunday. One of my cherished memories is of the peppermints in his pocket.
He was a very skilled bricklayer and stone mason and taught me many tricks of the trade.
Hilgert and Myrtle were the first to volunteer for church suppers, and wedding and funeral lunches. He worked tirelessly on cleanup days, outdoor maintenance and construction projects at the church. The outdoor signboard is a small example of his work and dedication. He left big shoes to fill. Hilgert, Myrtle and their boys were a big part of why we joined the community and the church.
Louise and I will miss his visits, good humour, jokes, and especially the twinkle in his eye.
We are unable to join you as we are out of the country but rest assured, our thoughts are with the boys, their families and particularly of Hilgert and Myrtle. Please accept our deepest condolences.

Dearest Family of Hilgert,
We join with so many others who knew Hilgert in offering our deepest sympathy on his passing. Although it is little consolation at this sad time, it should be of some satisfaction to know that in his passing you can celebrate the end of a very long and productive life.
If the outpouring of sympathy on his loss is any indication, you can proudly and confidently say that his life indeed was a life well-lived.
May you find peace and comfort in knowing that his loss is felt by all who knew and loved him.

I havent seen Hilgert too often in many years, now that we live in the Toronto area. It was always pleasant to share visits with him and Myrtle - wonderful people. My thoughts go back to the 40s when we lived on the farm that Percy Zacharias now owns. I was always fascinated with Hilgerts pulp truck with the sign "Bretzlaff Bros" on the door. I walked past their house every day on the way to school. Good memories.
May he rest in peace. Sincere condolences to the family.
