Obituary of Genevieve Cassidy

Peacefully in the arms of her daughter, Genevieve entered into eternal rest Thursday evening, November 16, 2023 at the Pontiac Community Hospital, Shawville, Quebec at the very young age of 81.

Left to love and share special memories is her daughter Katherine Westenberg (John) Hynes of Shawville, Quebec, son Jim (April) Westenberg of Summerfield, NC., grandchildren Kyle (Bridget Cabana) Hynes of Kinburn, ON, Katie Hynes (Shaun Linder) of Aylmer, QC and, Sydney and Brett Westenberg of North Carolina.  She will be lovingly missed by her very special brother Douglas (Pat) Cassidy and family of Waterloo, youngest sister Linda Cassidy and family of Medicine Hat, Alberta, cousins, many nieces, nephews and friends.

Genevieve was predeceased by her parents, Clarence (Nugget) Cassidy and Lillian (Robinson) of Walkerton, Ontario, eldest son Randy Westenberg of Winnipeg, Manitoba, infant brother Dennis, sisters Shirley Lantz, Betty Ruetz (Al) as well as, many in-laws, dear friends and companions over the years.

She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by very dear friend Jewell Rutledge who cared for and loved her unconditionally, along with many residents at the Centre Street Seniors Home in Shawville.  Our utmost thanks for the love and care you gave our mother.

Genevieve was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and spent years of dedicated service to the Kitchener-Waterloo Senior’s Civitan Club.  Beginning as a volunteer in the late 90’s, she worked her way to President-Elect and President.  She was an integral part of their fundraising and recruitment efforts over her many years.  In the early 2000’s, every Tuesday at noon, “Chief Chef Jenny” as she was called in the media, along with her team, provided nutritious full-course meals including coffee and dessert for only $4.50.  This was a passion and service she dedicated so many years of her life to.  She loved to help others and anyone who was in need.

After surviving back-to-back breast cancers, her daughter and family moved her to Shawville, Quebec where she lived and made numerous friends until her passing.  She truly was a social butterfly and will be missed terribly, but will remain in our hearts forever.

As per Jenny’s wishes, cremation has taken place and her ashes will be laid to rest with her mother Lillian Cassidy, in Calvary Roman Catholic Cemetery, Walkerton, Ontario next spring/summer, 2024.
