Obituary of Bruce Campbell
On Tuesday, May 16, 2023, at 73 years old, Richard "Bruce" Campbell died where he was born - in the beautiful Pontiac - the place he loved most dearly. Born on April 2, 1950, his father, (Richard) Edey Campbell (of Beechgrove) and his mother, Helen Pearly Campbell (nee Cochrane), were thrilled to welcome their new son. Sadly his mother died when Bruce was 14 years old.
A master at machinery in Pontiac High School (Shawville) Bruce was recognized with specialized training in the U.S. earning him an essential role as Machinist at EB Eddy (Scott Paper) in Hull. He continued to work until an accident left him with a painful disability.
Community engagers themselves, his parents never knew how his love for the area or his desire for a better community would lead their only child to pause his career to become the Mayor of the Municipality of Pontiac (1998-2005) and, before that, serve as a Councillor.
Pontiac-inspired, nature-loving Bruce upheld his love of fishing, hunting, boating, camps and the beauty of a good weather day. He relished golf and football. Bruce continued such joy vicariously through recent years. He was a good cook and enjoyed his tomatoes fresh off the vine. Bruce was generous, helpful and kind. He never married. Many of his close friends predeceased him. Despite his physical pain, he remained happy and appreciative to the end!
At Bruce’s request, there will be no funeral or memorial service. Instead, he asked his friends, neighbours, helpers, acquaintances, and loved ones to “Carry on and enjoy!”
