My sincere condolences to Marilee's family and friends. I had the honour of working alongside Marilee for many years when we were both actively involved in the literacy movement in Quebec.
She was such a gracious lady and extremely competent in the work she did over the years. At meetings, it was a delight to hear her respond to the agenda items in her soft spoken voice but so very strong opinions on the subject at hand.
She was an asset to many of our committees over the years.

Sincere condolences to Marilee's family. I worked with Marilee way back in the good ol' days of literacy. Her calm and wise words, her compassion, and her gentle nature were always appreciated. I had the chance to interview her as part of my thesis work a few years ago - she contributed to the literacy field, she made a difference. She will be missed.

I was a volunteer tutor trainer "working" for several years with Marilee in literacy. I can still picture her arriving for a workshop with her car piled to the roof with the materials that would be needed. After unloading the car and we had set up, she would greet the students with her warm smile and soft voice that would almost immediately put them at ease. If there was a glitch in the schedule, it was "don't worry, it will all work out". And it always did. She always thought things through very carefully before speaking and, as a result, both the students and benefited greatly from her counsel. I will really miss her

Marilee taught with her characteristic gentleness about how things fit and work together in a community, all the way from the molecular origami of protein molecules linking together to how chimney swifts and people live alongside one another. I know it was at least as hard for her not to be able to get out and see other people as much as she wanted these last few months as it has been for us not to be able to come see her. It was comforting from this distance to know that Robert, Eric, and Alex could be there to help her and each other, "hard row to hoe" as they would say where we grew up in Kentucky, as that has been.

I am so deeply saddened by the news of Marilee’s passing. I first met Marilee about 22 years ago as a literacy colleague and knew her to be kind, generous and dedicated. I was privileged to get to know her better when I started to come to the Pontiac about 12 years ago to facilitate tutor trainings with Marilee at the Western Quebec Literacy Council. On each of those trips she was always so welcoming and hospitable. She hosted me in her home, introduced me to the Pontiac region and the Pontiac Artists' Association, showed me around the area and always sent me home with something interesting, like a Kombucha scoby or some plants. She knew my husband was a gardener and gifted him with a pine seedling on one visit. He planted it on the banks of the Ottawa River near our home in Hudson and we check on it periodically, always referring to it as Marilee’s pine. As Marilee would say, “it’s doing pretty fine”. We will continue to visit it and think of Marilee each time we do. She was a beautiful person and the embodiment of “still waters run deep”. Her gentle soul will be missed by all who knew her and were touched by her. I certainly have been. My sincerest condolences to Robert and family.

Marilee, a gentle giant, in both physical and spiritual sense.
Fore mostly, in her dealings with special needs adults group under various incarnations as the Happy Rockers, TREE and as WQLC adherents. The WQLC ,or Western Quebec Literacy Council , under her leadership ,created the idea for and provided space for a group of special needs adults to get together and plan their own activities under the acronym TREE, with group outings as far as Quebec City, Montreal and Ottawa .She encouraged their participation in the monthly newsletter and AGM by getting everyone communicate what they did. Her leadership at the WQLC provided access to funding for yearly trophy ceremonies and dinners for the partisans of the curling group known as the Happy Rockers. She maintained a sustained presence at her WQLC office despite all the challenges of the location and facilities . She and Robert were always improving the space for it to become an inviting , inspirational and confidential location for the business of literacy. She welcomed everyone with an offer of tea and a good chair to relieve oneself of life's burdens.
When she moved into her house in town , it was shortly being diagnosed with cancer, yet she maintained the same welcoming attitude through all her time of treatment. Rarely she was not available to offer tea and a chair ; never did she focus on herself or her challenges.
As the three years of treatment took their toll, she kept participating in whatever was important to her. Initially ,she organized a major fundraising venture for the local hospital chemotherapy unit by getting musical friends to perform at a popular venue. It was a huge success largely because of the number of friends she had accumulated over her years in the area. She also maintained an online presence forwarding petitions about injustices and attended meetings about forestry issues as well as environmental concerns.
She was game to support anything that brought her joy even when she was in pain. I remember stopping by en route to the bike trail, and she managed to cycle a good distance before admitting it was too hard a seat. She wouldn't change for a softer seat but made her way slowly home.
This is the woman I was privileged to know and I will remember her gentle strength and strong belief in the value of each persons voice whenever I look at others.
