As I am Elaine's youngest sister, I was close in age to Melanie, Michael, Kelly, and Cory. After my mother died, I spent a lot of time hanging out with Melanie who is 6 months younger than me. Byron and Elaine always welcomed people into their home and you could always find a place at their table. Byron was a great husband and father. He found a passion in farming and you would almost always find him at the sale barn on Tuesday's.
When we were little Byron provided us with a Bombardier and we spent hours skidooing in the field behind their house. He always kept that skidoo full of gas for us too. Often times you could find 8-10 kids at the Hodgin house. He was always there for his kids.
Byron was a very social person. It seemed like he knew everyone and their family. I would just have to ask how someone was doing and he knew the answer.
He loved his euchre and Thursday's became their card night in Bristol. He taught me the game when I was a teenager and boy was he competitive.
Byron was very close to his own brothers and sisters. He was also a very close and important part of the Schwartz family. I can say that I knew Byron my entire life as he and Elaine were married 2 years before I was born. They would have celebrated 57 years of marriage in September.
We will all miss Byron. We will miss his smile, his knowledge, and his ability to always make you feel welcome. I am grateful and proud to have had Byron as a brother-in-law. To Elaine, Melanie, Michael, Cory and Kelly, Byron is now at pain-free peace and will always remain a part of your hearts and memories.

Uncle Byron will be missed by all, especially family who want to know anything about the Hodgins family, and life around Charteris. He was always ready to tell us who was related to whom, where they lived. He could tell us stories that he had been told by his grandmother, and his parents. On trips with Byron to deliver the mail from Shawville to Ladysmith, I learned who has lived at each farm along the Picanoc and who their children were.
He always was there to tell us about farming whether it was back in Charteris or what he was doing with his cattle lately. He was a true farmer to the last.
We will miss his presence but he will always be with us in our memories.
Thoughts are with all the family at this time

The loss of a husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, and uncle who was loved and dear to everyone leaves a vacuum in the lives of so many that can be difficult to fill. The memories shared of the fun, laughter, and good times will help to ease the pain of this loss. Those memories tell the story of a life that was filled with family, work, and his beloved farming.
Even though Byron worked hard, he took time to pursue the many things that brought him pleasure such as curling, hockey with his boys, euchre, travelling, camping, parties, the Orange Lodge, his church, and family get-together's. These family get-together's figured hugely in his life as he came from a family of nine and Elaine also came from a family of nine. If they weren't celebrating on the Hodgins side, they were celebrating on the Schwartz side. This kept them busy.
Every one in both families have a story to tell of Byron that is a treasure to have and to remember in this time of grieving. You lived a full and happy life, Byron. Take a rest in heaven now.
